The Bellevue Gold mine in Western Australia has successfully sourced an impressive average of 87.8% of its power needs from renewable energy over the last quarter. This achievement marks a significant step toward the mine’s goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025, making it the first mining operation globally to set such a target.
Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The mine’s progress is largely attributed to its newly installed 90-megawatt (MW) hybrid power station, which includes four wind turbines with a total capacity of 24 MW, a 27 MW solar farm, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 15 MW and 33 megawatt-hours (MWh). Thermal generation contributes an additional 24 MW. The facility, completed in mid-July 2023 by off-grid power specialist Zenith Energy, has already demonstrated remarkable efficiency.
Before the final wind turbines were installed, the mine made headlines in June by operating for 58 consecutive hours on 100% renewable energy. It followed up this achievement with another milestone in August, running for an impressive 84 hours without fossil fuel generation. The record was further extended in November, when the mine achieved 101 consecutive hours of fossil-free power generation.
Consistent Renewable Energy Usage
The consistent transition to renewable energy has been evident in the monthly data. The Bellevue Gold mine recorded 78% of its power from renewables in July, which rose to 88% in August. September saw a peak of 91%, with October and November both maintaining an 88% share. By December, renewable energy accounted for 87.8% of the mine’s total power generation in the last quarter of 2023. This trend positions Bellevue Gold to meet the upper end of its projected 80-90% renewable energy usage for the financial year 2026.
The mine’s sustainable practices not only reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship but also set a benchmark for the mining industry. As global demand for sustainable practices increases, Bellevue Gold’s initiative could influence other operations to follow suit.
