For many individuals in regional and remote communities of Western Australia, a cancer diagnosis often necessitates a journey to Perth, where they must leave behind their families, work, and the comforts of home. The emotional, logistical, and financial burdens of long-distance travel for treatment can be daunting. In response to this challenge, the Cancer Council WA has established two self-catering accommodation lodges in Perth, providing a vital support system for these patients and their carers.
Comfortable Lodging for Cancer Patients
Milroy Lodge, located in Shenton Park, offers a single-storey facility nestled in tranquil bushland. This lodge is within easy walking distance of public transport, enhancing accessibility for guests. It features 24 single units, three double units, and two twin units, creating a calm environment conducive to recovery.
The second option, Crawford Lodge, is situated within the grounds of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Nedlands. This two-storey facility includes six single units, 49 twin units, and four family units, allowing for convenient access to essential treatment services. Both lodges are designed to provide clean and safe motel-style accommodation while offering on-site support services that address the practical and emotional needs of patients and their families.
During their stay, guests benefit from a supportive community atmosphere. One lodge guest remarked, “Accommodation and all the other things that need to be considered can be very stressful. This place gives me one less thing to stress about.”
Financial Assistance and Eligibility
Accommodation charges are per person, per night, and vary according to room type. For those traveling to Perth for cancer treatment from locations 100 kilometres or more away, including Northam or York, the government’s Patient Assisted Travel Scheme (PATS) may provide financial support. To qualify for assistance, patients must apply in advance through the PATS Clerk at their local hospital or via their treating doctor before beginning their journey.
If patients are eligible for PATS, they may incur minimal costs, as the Cancer Council will invoice PATS directly for accommodation fees. Guests are typically responsible only for personal telephone charges during their stay.
By providing accessible lodging and essential support services, the Cancer Council WA aims to alleviate some of the burdens faced by regional cancer patients. The lodges not only serve as a place to stay, but they also foster resilience and hope during a challenging time.
