Urgent Rescue: Swiss Climber Falls on Indonesia’s Mount Rinjani

Swiss climber Benedikt Emmenegger, 46, was descending the mountain when he fell.

UPDATE: A Swiss climber has fallen on Indonesia’s deadly Mount Rinjani, just weeks after the tragic death of a Brazilian tourist on the same perilous trail. Benedikt Emmenegger, 46, was descending the mountain with his daughter and a local porter when he slipped on a steep slope at approximately 11:25 AM today. His fall has reignited concerns over safety on this notorious volcano, known for its treacherous terrain.

Rescue efforts were launched immediately as Mr. Emmenegger became stranded and unable to move. Fortunately, he was rescued in time, unlike Juliana Marins, the 26-year-old Brazilian woman who fell to her death in June. “We, along with the medical team, have already moved to provide assistance,” stated Yarman, head of Mount Rinjani National Park. Dramatic footage shows Mr. Emmenegger lying on a mat, wrapped in a gold thermal blanket, with his daughter by his side as rescue teams provided first aid.

Authorities reported that the helicopter for evacuation was prepared and made its way to the scene. “Hopefully, the weather cooperates,” Yarman added. Details regarding the extent of Mr. Emmenegger’s injuries have not yet been confirmed, but he was attempting to reach the volcano’s famous sulphur lake, Segara Anak, using a hazardous route known for its risks, especially during humid conditions.

Mount Rinjani, standing at 3,700 metres on the island of Lombok, has become a hotspot for tourists but also a site of increasing fatalities due to its unstable slopes and unpredictable weather. The recent incident follows the outcry from Ms. Marins’ family, who criticized Indonesian authorities for “serious negligence” during her rescue attempt, which was hindered by fog and difficult terrain, ultimately leading to her tragic death before help could arrive.

Mr. Emmenegger’s rescue provides a stark contrast to the recent tragic events on Mount Rinjani, highlighting both the dangers of the volcano and the critical need for improved safety measures for climbers. As rescue teams continue their work, the focus shifts to ensuring the safety of hikers on this beautiful yet perilous destination.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as authorities assess the situation and implement necessary safety protocols.
