Several European airlines have suspended flights to and over various countries in the Middle East amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The situation has raised concerns about potential disruptions across the Persian Gulf, prompting airlines to take precautionary measures.
Air France announced the cancellation of its flights between Paris and Dubai for Friday and Saturday. The airline cited the “current situation in the Middle East” as the reason for the temporary suspension. Similarly, KLM has halted its flights to Dubai, Riyadh, and Dammam in Saudi Arabia, along with Tel Aviv, until further notice. The Dutch carrier stated that it is avoiding airspace over several Gulf countries, including Iran, Iraq, and Israel.
The rapid cancellations highlight how swiftly geopolitical tensions can impact civil aviation. This disruption followed remarks from President Donald Trump, who confirmed the deployment of naval assets to the Middle East. His statements have reignited fears that the US may act on threats to attack Iran in response to the Iranian government’s violent crackdown on protesters.
A number of other airlines have also adjusted their schedules. Flights to Dubai operated by Luxair, British Airways, and Transavia were cancelled over the weekend, as reported by Dubai International Airport and data from flight tracking service Flightradar24. Lufthansa has suspended its flights to Tehran until March 28, 2024, while maintaining routes to and from Tel Aviv and Amman, Jordan.
Earlier this month, British Airways temporarily ceased operations to Bahrain, which is home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet. This move is part of a broader trend, as several European and American carriers paused operations to Gulf countries in June prior to Iranian missile strikes at a base in Qatar. Those missile strikes forced Qatar and neighboring countries to close their airspace, leading to widespread disruption for international airlines.
As the situation develops, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight statuses and potential cancellations. The unfolding events in the Middle East continue to raise alarm for both airlines and passengers alike, underscoring the fragility of air travel amid geopolitical conflicts.
