SGTA Tennis Classic Thrives Despite Challenging Conditions

The 26th Annual SGTA Junior and Open Tennis Classic took place at the Leongatha Tennis Club on January 3 and 4, 2024, featuring two days of competitive tennis amid varying weather conditions. The event showcased strong community support, with players demonstrating resilience and skill across all age categories.

The first day presented a true test for participants, as players contended with extreme heat throughout a prolonged day of matches. Despite the challenging climate, the quality of tennis remained high. Later in the afternoon, a sudden storm prompted a temporary suspension of play, adding an unexpected twist to the tournament’s proceedings. Fortunately, day two offered more favorable weather, which allowed matches to resume earlier and carry on into the evening, concluding with the final match at 20:30.

A total of 85 individual entrants participated in the tournament, attracting competitors from local areas, including Latrobe Valley, West Gippsland, the Peninsula, and Melbourne. The strong turnout highlighted the growing reputation of the SGTA Classic, with 31 local players representing the strength of tennis in the South Gippsland region. Over the two days, 180 matches were played across 17 events, ranging from the 10 and Under divisions to Open singles and doubles for both men and women.

Community support was evident throughout the tournament, with the Leongatha Tennis Club Committee, including president Warren Littlejohn, contributing significantly to the event’s success. The committee also organized a fundraising barbecue to assist players and their families. The tournament crew, including Matt and Keerah Pocklington and Kylie Van Den Broek, received special recognition for their hard work, with Kylie managing entries and ensuring smooth operations.

Acknowledgment was also given to the parents and players for their exemplary sportsmanship, positive attitudes, and respect, which fostered a welcoming environment. The tournament benefited from the involvement of coaches such as Brad, who brought six talented players from Melbourne, and Chris, who assisted with various logistical tasks. Chris, who is also the tournament director for the upcoming Ace Classic Tournament in Pakenham, will collaborate with coach Matt Pocklington for that event.

In tandem with the tournament, SGTA’s head coaches, Ricardo and Matt, hosted a Performance Week for dedicated academy players. This initiative combined two tournaments with on-court training sessions, a psychology workshop, and beach swims, aiming to develop an elite mindset while fostering camaraderie and team spirit.

The competition culminated in various exciting matches, with notable results across different categories.

In the 10 and Under Group A Unisex Singles, Frederick Steele from Melbourne triumphed over Quinn Donaldson from Leongatha. Meanwhile, in the 10 and Under Group B Unisex Singles, Lily Van Den Broek from Korumburra claimed victory against Ruben Russell from Leongatha. Other results included:

– **12 and Under Boys Singles**: Harrison Crane (Traralgon) defeated Archar Hughes (Korumburra).
– **14 and Under Boys Singles**: Finlay Bennett (Melbourne) won against Jimmy Joyce-Biss (Drouin).
– **Men’s Open Singles**: Matthew Pocklington (Leongatha) emerged victorious over Tim Bloye (Drouin).
– **Ladies Open Singles**: Madison Van Den Broek (Korumburra) defeated Imelda Rongoni (Pakenham).

The SGTA Junior and Open Tennis Classic again demonstrated the importance of community sports, uniting players of all ages, families, coaches, and volunteers in a celebration of tennis in South Gippsland. As the event concluded, excitement builds for future tournaments, particularly with the anticipated participation of Destanee Aiava in the upcoming Ace Classic.
