Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM Recognized for Community Health Initiatives

Dr. Ravin Sadhai OAM has been honored for his significant contributions to community health through innovative initiatives in Bacchus Marsh, Australia. His programs, the “Pub Clinic” and the “Ladies Lounge,” have transformed how residents access medical care, making it more informal and approachable.

Initiated in 2008, the Pub Clinic aims to engage men who typically avoid conventional medical settings. Dr. Sadhai noticed a troubling trend: many men in their forties and fifties in the area had not undergone medical check-ups for years. “My question then was, ‘how do I take my clinic to these fellows?’” he stated. By hosting informal gatherings at a local pub, he created a space where men could discuss health issues over a beer, without the pressure of formal presentations.

Throughout its 17 years of operation, the Pub Clinic has attracted a growing number of attendees, with nearly 130 people participating in the latest event in 2025. During these sessions, men receive basic health assessments, including blood pressure and blood sugar tests, alongside discussions about health concerns. “Anecdotal evidence suggests the initiative has led to more men going to their trusted GP and getting tested,” Dr. Sadhai noted.

The success of the Pub Clinic led to the establishment of the Ladies Lounge, which addresses women’s health issues in a similar casual setting. This initiative highlights Dr. Sadhai’s commitment to making healthcare accessible to all community members.

Dr. Sadhai’s dedication to community health extends beyond these programs. He has been involved in sports medicine as a medic for the Bacchus Marsh Football Club and the Victorian Football League since 2005. His experiences on the field helped him maintain connections with numerous athletes, many of whom continue to seek his medical advice years later.

Yet, it is Dr. Sadhai’s work in palliative care that he finds most fulfilling. He explained, “In palliative care, you very quickly develop a deep understanding of your patients.” He values the relationships he has built over his career, stating it is a “privilege and an honour” to provide care in such sensitive circumstances.

Receiving the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) is a significant moment for Dr. Sadhai, reminding him of the support from his family, especially his late father, Dr. Jay Sadhai. After emigrating from South Africa in 1977, Dr. Jay Sadhai became a respected figure in Bacchus Marsh, practicing medicine for over 30 years while actively engaging in anti-apartheid activism. “He’s the biggest inspiration in my life,” Dr. Sadhai emphasized, reflecting on his father’s influence on his career and community work.

Dr. Sadhai’s initiatives have not only impacted individual lives but also strengthened the fabric of the Bacchus Marsh community. By fostering open communication around health, he has created an environment that encourages residents to prioritize their well-being. The legacy of both Dr. Ravin Sadhai and his father continues to thrive through the Pub Clinic, the Ladies Lounge, and their collective commitment to community health.
