Wreckage Found in Search for Missing Plane Over Snowy Mountains

URGENT UPDATE: Wreckage has been located in the ongoing search for a plane that went missing two days ago while traveling from Wangaratta, Victoria to the NSW South Coast. The aircraft, piloted by David Stephens, a 74-year-old accountant from Bega, failed to reach Moruya Airport after takeoff, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

At approximately 4:30 PM on Tuesday, authorities were alerted to a potential crash near Dargals Trail in the Snowy Valley. A multi-agency search was launched, involving NSW Police, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and emergency teams from Victoria, supported by an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) rescue jet and helicopters from both states. The search faced temporary suspension due to challenging ground conditions but resumed early Wednesday.

On Thursday at around 4 PM, a rescue helicopter identified what is believed to be the wreckage of Stephens’ 1966 Beechcraft Debonair near its last known GPS coordinates over Khancoban in the Snowy Mountains. Authorities have yet to confirm the status of the pilot.

Before the discovery, Stephens’ family described him as an experienced pilot who has been flying since the 1960s. “David loved to fly. He earned his pilot’s license even before his driver’s license,” they stated in a heartfelt message to Nine News. The family expressed deep concern and hope for his safe return.

Tony Rettke, president of the Frog’s Hollow Flyers aero club, highlighted Stephens’ capability, noting that his plane had recently undergone servicing prior to the flight. “We’re all aware of the different possibilities in flying light aircraft, and David is very capable and very experienced,” Rettke remarked.

As investigations continue under the oversight of NSW Police, the search teams remain on high alert, hoping for further updates on the situation. The emotional toll on Stephens’ family and friends is immense, as they await news during this challenging time.
