Notably, the collaboration between the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) and Cotton Australia has led to the development of the PLANET. PEOPLE. PADDOCK. Sustainability Framework and updates to existing programs like myBMP. These initiatives are designed to help growers demonstrate the positive impacts of cotton production on critical issues, including greenhouse gas emissions, water resources, and soil health.
In a recent discussion, Chris Cosgrove, the industry’s sustainability consultant, emphasized the importance of sustainability in cotton production. He stated, “Sustainability is about managing the economic, social and environmental risks and opportunities in any business or industry.” By measuring sustainability, growers can optimize the use of resources, leading to increased efficiency and productivity.
One notable achievement in the Australian cotton sector is the improved efficiency in water usage. Advances in technology have allowed growers to precisely measure water consumption, reinforcing the principle of “Measure to Manage.” This approach, combined with innovations in plant breeding, has enabled farmers to achieve greater yields while using less water. Given that water is often the largest input expense for growers, enhancing its efficiency carries significant financial implications.
Beyond water, the correlation between sustainability and efficiency extends to various inputs. For instance, optimizing nitrogen use enhances farm margins while producing crops with lower greenhouse gas intensity. Furthermore, responsible pesticide use not only reduces costs but also fosters community trust in sustainable practices.
Cosgrove pointed out that the sustainability data required by stakeholders, such as banks and cotton brands, often overlaps with the information already collected by growers. “Growers who measure key sustainability indicators can use the same data to support market access by providing the social and environmental information that customers are increasingly requesting,” he explained. This data-driven approach enhances the industry’s credibility, offering tangible evidence of its responsible practices.
Recently, the industry has updated its sustainability indicators, compiling a comprehensive list of 44 metrics that growers can utilize to monitor their operations. These indicators cover eight priority areas: water, greenhouse gases, native vegetation, pesticides, soil health, workplace conditions, productivity, and economic contributions. This updated framework aims to streamline the measurement process, aligning farm-level practices with industry sustainability reporting requirements.
“By providing a clear list of relevant indicators, we have eliminated the guesswork for growers,” Cosgrove stated. The new guidelines serve as a valuable tool, enabling farmers to collect data efficiently for various purposes, including emissions accounting and compliance with customer demands related to regenerative agriculture and human rights.
