Perth bars and clubs are implementing a new safety initiative called the “Ask for Angela” campaign, designed to assist individuals who feel unsafe during a night out. This approach, inspired by a similar program launched in the UK in 2016, aims to create a safer environment for patrons in Perth’s entertainment districts.
The original campaign in the UK was established as a response to the tragic death of Angela Crompton, who was killed by her husband in 2012. Now, the Australian Hotels Association WA and the Cook Government are rolling out educational materials to venues across popular nightlife areas, including the Central Business District (CBD), Northbridge, Fremantle, Mandurah, Scarborough, and Hillarys.
Under the initiative, individuals who feel threatened or require assistance can approach bar staff and request “Angela.” Staff members will then take the person aside in a discreet manner to assess the situation and determine the best course of action, which may include contacting a manager or security personnel.
Voluntary Participation and Future Training
The campaign is voluntary for venues, but it is expected to have a significant impact on customer safety. According to Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia, this initiative may expand beyond Perth and could eventually become a standard element in training programs for licensed venues. “It might become part of the material for a responsible service of alcohol qualification in due course,” he noted.
Online resources, including training materials, posters for venues, and social media assets, were made available on March 7, 2024. This educational content aims to equip bar staff with the knowledge needed to manage potentially dangerous situations effectively.
AHA WA spokeswoman Angela Beechey emphasized the importance of this campaign in enhancing existing safety measures. “Our venues and our staff within venues are already trained on patron safety; however, this adds a new layer of that and provides a discrete code that customers can use with bar staff if they are ever feeling unsafe,” she stated.
Beechey also highlighted that the system allows for a discreet response, whether that involves assisting with transport, contacting law enforcement, or addressing the particular needs of the individual.

The implementation of the “Ask for Angela” campaign aligns with similar initiatives in various bars that encourage patrons to request an “angel shot” when they need help. The aim is to foster an environment where individuals can feel secure while enjoying a night out in Perth.
As the program gains traction, it may set a precedent for other regions in Australia to adopt similar measures aimed at ensuring the safety of nightlife patrons.
