A recent survey indicates that many iPhone users are delaying the upgrade to iOS 26, which was released several months ago. The study, conducted by SellCell and involving 2,000 adult iPhone users in the United States, found that over one in five respondents have not yet updated their devices.
The primary reason for this hesitation appears to be a lack of awareness. Many users reported not realizing that the update was available. Others believed that their devices would automatically install the new software without any action needed on their part. Concerns about potential issues following the upgrade also played a significant role in users’ decisions.
Concerns Over Performance and Battery Life
Practical worries topped the list of concerns, particularly fears regarding battery life and overall device performance. Some users expressed apprehension that updating to iOS 26 could lead to a decline in battery efficiency, while others were concerned about slower performance. Despite Apple‘s efforts to optimize the software for older hardware, these doubts persist.
A notable portion of users also mentioned their dislike for the new Liquid Glass interface, with complaints about readability and visual comfort leading them to postpone the update. The interface change has not been universally welcomed, with some iPhone owners feeling that the aesthetic alterations detract from usability.
Cautious Approach to Software Updates
Caution appears to characterize the overall approach to software updates among iPhone users. The survey revealed that approximately 61 percent of participants tend not to install major updates immediately upon release. Instead, many prefer to observe the experiences of early adopters before committing to the new software. Some users indicated they only proceed with updates when prompted repeatedly or when the update becomes mandatory.
Confidence in the new operating system is limited, with only 28 percent of respondents expressing no reservations about iOS 26. This signifies that nearly three-quarters of users harbor at least one concern regarding the update. Battery drain and performance issues remain the most prominent worries, highlighting a significant barrier to widespread adoption.
Despite the ongoing rollout of iOS 26, these findings underscore a familiar trend among iPhone owners. For many, the perceived risks associated with battery health, device speed, and usability outweigh the allure of new features. Until the software has demonstrated its reliability, a considerable number of users are inclined to hold off on the upgrade.
