URGENT UPDATE: Global demand for gold has surged to a historic high in 2025, reaching an unprecedented 5,002 tonnes, according to the latest report from the World Gold Council (WGC). This marks the first time demand has exceeded 5,000 tonnes, highlighting a groundbreaking year for the precious metal.
Investors are flocking to gold as a safe haven amid mounting uncertainties in financial markets worldwide. By year’s end, total investments in gold skyrocketed to an astonishing $555 billion. The WGC reports that securities backed by physical gold were in particularly high demand, with investors increasing their holdings in gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by 801 tonnes throughout the year.
In addition, purchases of gold bars and coins accelerated sharply, reaching a remarkable 1,374 tonnes or approximately $154 billion. The strongest demand for bars and coins was driven by consumers in China and India, which together accounted for over 50% of this increase.
Central banks also played a crucial role in driving demand for gold, as they seek to diversify their reserves and reduce reliance on the US dollar. The WGC estimates central banks added 863 tonnes to their gold reserves last year, further solidifying gold’s status as a strategic asset.
However, not all segments of the gold market flourished. Demand for gold jewelry saw a significant decline, largely attributed to soaring prices. Since the beginning of 2025, gold prices have surged by approximately 30%, following a staggering 65% increase the previous year.
The implications of this surge are profound. Investors are increasingly viewing gold not just as a commodity, but as a vital tool for financial security in turbulent times. The WGC’s insights into gold demand trends underscore the emotional and economic significance of this shift.
As we look ahead, stakeholders in the gold industry will be closely monitoring market dynamics. The continuing rise in demand for gold could impact prices and investment strategies globally. With uncertainty persisting in financial markets, gold is poised to remain a focal point for investors seeking stability.
Stay tuned for more updates as this developing story unfolds, and explore the full details in the WGC’s newly released Gold Demand Trends report.
