Young West Australians are now encouraged to apply for a chance to represent their electorate in the upcoming 2026 Youth Parliament. This initiative, organized by the Y WA, is designed for young people aged 15 to 25 to engage in discussions surrounding issues that matter to their peers and to draft youth-focused legislation.
The program aims to empower participants by providing them with firsthand experience in the democratic process. It also fosters the development of essential skills, including leadership, advocacy, and public speaking. According to Tim McDonald, the chief executive of Y WA, this program is crucial for amplifying youth voices in public policy discussions. He stated, “Young West Australians have powerful ideas and perspectives. This program creates a space for them to learn, connect and lead, and to be taken seriously in decision-making processes.”
Program Details and Impact
This four-month program culminates in July, when participants will have the opportunity to attend Parliament House for a formal debate in the chamber. The proposed bills generated by the youth parliamentarians will be presented not only to members of the State Government and the Opposition but also to the Governor of Western Australia, the Mayor of Perth, and representatives from the WA Department of Communities.
Past iterations of the Youth Parliament have already seen several youth-developed bills incorporated into State legislation. This demonstrates the tangible impact that the program can have on policymaking in Western Australia.
Applications for the 2026 Y WA Youth Parliament are currently open and will close on February 19, 2026. Interested candidates are encouraged to seize this opportunity to influence their community and gain valuable experience in the legislative process.
