Denver Seeks Community Input on Road Safety Improvements

Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is actively seeking public feedback on proposed road improvements in the Globeville and Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods. Concerns have surfaced among residents regarding issues such as speeding, heavy traffic cutting through local streets, and unsafe pedestrian crossings. The streets identified as most problematic include Lincoln, East 45th Avenue, Clayton, and Steele Streets.

According to DOTI Senior Planner Paige Colton, speeding is directly linked to the severity of accidents. “Speeds are really correlated with how severe crashes are if a crash happens,” she explained. The department’s objective is to reduce vehicle speeds, a concern echoed by the community, which has expressed feelings of insecurity on roads where traffic moves too quickly.

In response to these community concerns, DOTI has analyzed speed data and outlined specific improvements. Proposed measures include the installation of speed humps, curb extensions, enhanced pedestrian crossings, bus stops, and dedicated bike lanes. Furthermore, there is a suggestion to limit through traffic in certain areas to enhance safety for residents.

The public can share their thoughts through an online survey available on DOTI‘s website. Feedback on the proposed projects will be accepted until July 21, 2023. In addition to the survey, DOTI plans to hold a public open house, allowing community members to review the proposed safety improvements in detail. Colton emphasized the importance of community participation, stating, “That’s really the goal with the survey and then at the open house. We’ll have these big plots of maps where we can go, ‘Oh, where do you live? OK, let’s look at the street you live on. Here are the improvements we’re suggesting. What do you think?’”

The installation of approved safety enhancements is projected to commence in 2027. This initiative represents a significant effort by DOTI to engage with the community and create safer road conditions for all residents in the Globeville and Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods.
