Mitsubishi has unveiled an updated version of its ASX, marking a notable achievement as the model celebrates its 15th anniversary. Renowned for its reliability and user-friendly features, the ASX is now enhanced with design and technology elements from Renault, offering a fresh European aesthetic that Mitsubishi hopes will attract both loyal fans and new customers.
The mid-spec ASX Aspire, showcased in a striking Royal Blue, features a distinctive high-riding SUV body. Its design incorporates sharp angles and bold elements, such as outward-facing chevrons flanking the iconic Mitsubishi diamond. The wide LED headlights are positioned above the daytime running lights, complemented by a glossy black trapezoidal grille. The vehicle’s flared guards elegantly cover the 18-inch alloy wheels, while black plastic stone protectors enhance both style and functionality.
Notably classified as a small SUV, the ASX adopts a ‘wheel at each corner’ architecture that maximizes interior space and provides a stable driving platform. The overall profile is neat, with rounded edges on the bonnet and a gently sloping roofline that integrates a spoiler. The tailgate design bulges outward, ensuring ample cargo capacity without compromising headroom.
Despite the elevated belt line that reduces side window size, the ASX maintains an open feel, avoiding any sense of claustrophobia. Inside, the ASX impresses with a cockpit design that caters not only to the driver but also to passengers. Although space is limited, individuals up to 183 cm can comfortably fit in the front seats, despite some restrictions in head and shoulder room when seated beside a similarly sized occupant.
The centre stack boasts a vertically-mounted 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring AM/FM/DAB radio along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities. Below this, the dual-zone automatic climate control system includes a steering wheel heater. A floating console, equipped with a storage tray and a stubby gear selector, features a wireless phone charger, a key fob holder, and twin cup holders, creating a stylish yet functional interior.
The steering wheel, which is smaller than most but designed for comfort, maximizes thigh room for the driver. It is equipped with various controls, including adaptive cruise control and driver display adjustments, as well as audio and telephone functions. Paddle shifters are conveniently positioned for swift gear changes in the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), allowing for an engaging driving experience.
Mitsubishi has also prioritized the use of space in the ASX. The second-row seats can slide both forwards and backwards, accommodating additional legroom or cargo space as needed. The curved roofline ensures rear headroom remains comfortable, even with the seats positioned toward the back. The cloth-trimmed seats provide comfort during summer heat, featuring an eye-catching concentric circle pattern.
Performance-wise, the ASX is equipped with a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine generating a robust 113 kW and 270 Nm of torque. This engine delivers a responsive and enjoyable driving experience, characterized by a distinctive mechanical soundtrack. The DCT technology allows for seamless gear shifts, enhancing overall performance.
Key features include combined Auto Hold and Hill Start Assist, which prevent the ASX from rolling when parked on an incline. This system uses sensors to balance the vehicle’s movements, ensuring smooth operation. The Lane Centering Assist technology is another highlight, automatically keeping the ASX centered in its lane, although it can occasionally struggle with poorly maintained road markings.
The electronic power steering is responsive, allowing for precise steering control with minimal driver input. Rather than feeling twitchy, the ASX delivers a taut, precise driving experience that encourages engagement. The ride quality is firm yet comfortable, allowing for confident cornering without being overly harsh.
Overall, the new ASX represents a significant evolution from its predecessor, combining reliability with a contemporary European feel. As Mitsubishi celebrates this milestone, the ASX’s fresh design and advanced features position it well within the competitive SUV market.
