The Hedland community is embracing the new Kurlu Kurlu Wirri playground, which opened to the public in December 2023. Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 16, 2024, families and children have flocked to the space, marking it as a popular destination in the area.
The playground has become a focal point for community interaction, showcasing a significant investment in local infrastructure. According to Shelly McDowall, acting infrastructure projects and assets manager for the Town of Port Hedland, the project was a rewarding endeavor. “Being part of the team delivering this project has been incredibly rewarding,” she stated. “This space represents a significant investment in creating an inclusive and welcoming public space for our Hedland community.”
Located in the Spoilbank Marina precinct, Kurlu Kurlu Wirri translates to “Little People Play” in the Kariyarra language. The design of the playground reflects the unique landscape of Hedland and was constructed with the assistance of the local Indigenous company Yurra.
The project has already made a positive impact on local families. Martin Aldridge, deputy chair of commissioners for the Town of Port Hedland, highlighted the community’s enthusiastic response. “Kurlu Kurlu Wirri is already bringing families together in a way that reflects the heart of Hedland,” he remarked. “You can feel the community ownership, and that’s the real success of this project.”
Kurlu Kurlu Wirri offers an engaging environment designed for individuals of all abilities. The playground aims to foster inclusivity, providing a safe and enjoyable space for all children. The community’s active participation in the project is evident, and its success is reflected in the large turnout of visitors on a daily basis.
As the playground continues to attract families, it is clear that Kurlu Kurlu Wirri will play an essential role in enhancing the social fabric of Hedland. The community now has a vibrant space that not only caters to recreational needs but also strengthens local connections and promotes a sense of belonging.
