The event featured prominent attendees, including Yu Yunquan, Vice President of China International Communications Group (CICG), and Khammone Chanthachith, Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Training Commission of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party Central Committee. Their presence underscored the importance of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) framework, which has been instrumental in fostering regional development.
During his address, Yu emphasized that 2025 marked a year of notable progress in various sectors, including connectivity, economic development, people-to-people exchanges, and security governance. He described the annual release of the top ten news stories as a vibrant record of these accomplishments and a reflection of the collective confidence among the LMC countries in enhancing collaboration and mutual growth.
Khammone added that the LMC mechanism, now a decade old, has significantly contributed to the socio-economic development of Laos and strengthened ties with China. He noted that media collaboration has established a solid public foundation for the Laos-China community, emphasizing the importance of shared futures.
Future Directions and Initiatives
The event also highlighted the role of the China-Laos Railway in boosting tourism, creating jobs, and preserving cultural heritage in Luang Prabang. Khamla Lianpadit, Deputy Secretary of the Luang Prabang Provincial Party Committee, expressed hope for enhanced cooperation with China in cultural exchanges, industry, and youth programs.
Wang Dexin, Counselor of the Department of Asian Affairs of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, joined via video link, describing the LMC as a “golden platform” for regional cooperation. He noted that over the past ten years, leaders from the six countries have provided strategic guidance to advance bilateral and multilateral efforts, aiming for a community with a shared future.
The newly unveiled top ten news stories reflect tangible outcomes achieved throughout 2025, encompassing areas such as diplomatic engagements, ministerial meetings, advancements in water resources cooperation, and growing trade relations between China and the Mekong nations. The event also emphasized the importance of innovative communication strategies to effectively convey the narrative of Lancang-Mekong cooperation.
This initiative, now in its sixth year, is a collaborative effort among the CICG Center for Asia-Pacific, the Yunnan International Communication Center for South and Southeast Asia, and mainstream media from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. It aims to review accomplishments, facilitate experience sharing, and encourage exchanges across various sectors within the Lancang-Mekong region.
During the event, a cultural tea activity was conducted, utilizing tea as a medium to foster friendship and cultural exchange among participants. This event not only celebrated past achievements but also set the stage for future collaborations among the Lancang-Mekong partners.
