The redevelopment of Grafton Base Hospital has reached a significant milestone, with the commencement of early construction works valued at $263.8 million. This phase includes new traffic arrangements on Arthur Street, designed to enhance safety for patients, staff, and visitors.
State Nationals Member of Parliament for Clarence, Richie Williamson, expressed his support for the ongoing works, noting that changes in traffic conditions will facilitate the installation of a new pedestrian crossing. “These works are a visible sign that the long-awaited redevelopment is moving forward,” said Mr. Williamson.
The initial construction efforts encompass minor refurbishments to a nearby building, which will allow for the relocation of ambulatory care services from the main construction zone. This strategic move ensures that essential health services remain accessible throughout the redevelopment process. Mr. Williamson acknowledged that while short-term disruptions are inevitable, the changes are crucial for improving hospital access and preparing the site for future major construction.
Future Developments and Hospital Services
In addition to the main hospital construction, work is also progressing at the former Grafton Gaol site. Two administration buildings are being refurbished to accommodate hospital administration staff. Once completed, this transition will enable redevelopment activities to commence on the main hospital campus without interrupting clinical services.
The comprehensive redevelopment plan includes the construction of a new three-storey Acute Services Building. Key features will comprise an expanded Emergency Department, an Emergency Short Stay Unit, Medical Imaging and MRI facilities, an inpatient unit, and an enlarged Day Surgery and Operating Suite, which will include two new operating theatres.
Mr. Williamson emphasized the importance of providing full maternity services as part of the initial stage of the redevelopment. “It is critical that maternity services are fully operational as part of this stage – not just accommodated as a future shell. Families in the Clarence Valley deserve certainty when it comes to local maternity care,” he asserted.
The funding commitment for this extensive redevelopment was made by the former NSW Nationals Government, and Mr. Williamson expressed his appreciation that the current NSW Government continues to honor this promise. The ongoing construction is anticipated to greatly enhance healthcare facilities in the region, ultimately benefiting the local community.
