A recent effort by the Great Lakes Eagle Health team to monitor PFAS pollution in young bald eagles along the Wisconsin River faced challenges. During their expedition, the team utilized various modes of transport, including boat and truck, to access remote locations. Unfortunately, their first two stops yielded no active nests. At the second site, wildlife biologist Dan Goltz ascended a 70-foot tree, only to discover an empty nest swaying gently in the breeze. This setback highlights the difficulties in locating nests during the breeding season.
The purpose of the blood tests conducted on the young eagles is to evaluate the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are harmful chemicals linked to various health issues.
