Urgent Update: Missing Pilot Presumed Dead in Snowy Mountains Crash

UPDATE: A pilot is presumed dead following a devastating plane crash in the Snowy Mountains on July 15, 2023. Authorities report that the impact was so severe it is deemed ‘unsurvivable.’ The victim, believed to be David Stephens, was flying over Dargals Trail when the incident occurred around 4:35 PM local time.

Officials from the Riverina Police District confirmed the grim assessment, stating the aircraft was virtually unrecognizable after the crash. Superintendent Andrew Spliet emphasized the intensity of the impact, saying, “You wouldn’t recognize it as an aeroplane.” As search teams work under challenging conditions, the recovery operation is currently focused on establishing the cause of the crash and identifying the pilot’s remains.

The operation has faced delays due to steep, overgrown terrain and poor weather conditions, complicating efforts to locate the wreckage. Superintendent Spliet noted, “It was very difficult to get to… when weather conditions cleared, we were able to get those air assets over the coordinates.”

David Stephens, a resident of Brogo, was flying his cherished 1966 Debonair aircraft when he went missing. Earlier, he had flown from Moruya Airport to Frogs Hollow, then to Wangaratta in Victoria. His partner, Lynda Leigh, shared her concern regarding the unpredictable mountain weather, stating, “We have to assume he must have seen a way over the mountain to decide not to turn back.”

Community members have rallied in support, expressing their condolences and gratitude for the search efforts under treacherous conditions. Leigh voiced appreciation for the community’s support, highlighting the emotional toll of waiting for answers. “We’ll only have answers once they locate the plane and, with that, David,” she said.

The impact of this tragedy extends beyond the family, as Stephens was a respected figure in the local aviation and motorsport communities. He was recognized for his significant contributions, having served as secretary of the Frogs Hollow Flyers club and participated in various rally sports. Club president Tony Rettke reflected on Stephens’ dedication and expertise, stating he had “a lot to contribute to being a wise person and a flyer for many years.”

As recovery efforts continue, authorities remain committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the crash. The community is left awaiting further developments, with heavy hearts and hopes for closure.
