BREAKING: Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park in Pearcedale, Victoria has just unveiled its state-of-the-art Aquatic Fauna Conservation Facility on February 10, 2023. This facility is crucial for supporting the conservation efforts of threatened aquatic species, starting with the Eastern Dwarf Galaxias (Galaxiella pusilla), a small fish currently listed as Endangered in Victoria.
The new facility features cutting-edge environmental controls and adaptable tank systems, designed to enhance long-term husbandry, research, and breeding programs for these vulnerable species. The Eastern Dwarf Galaxias, once prevalent across parts of Victoria, Tasmania, and South Australia, has seen its populations dwindle due to habitat loss, wetland drainage, climate change, and competition from invasive species.
Michael Johnson, owner and director of Moonlit Sanctuary, expressed his commitment to wildlife conservation, stating:
“When we opened Moonlit Sanctuary 25 years ago, our goal was always to create meaningful change for Australia’s wildlife. This new facility allows us to extend that commitment into the freshwater space, where species like the Eastern Dwarf Galaxias urgently need our help.”
The facility was made possible through funding from the State Government via a Nature Fund grant from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action. The project also benefited from the expertise of Chris Lamin of Middle Creek Farm and Greg Martin from Aquariums by Design, who played vital roles in developing the sophisticated systems now in place to support these delicate fish.
As the facility grows, it will aim to house additional threatened aquatic species, furthering Moonlit Sanctuary’s mission to combat biodiversity loss. The urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated; with many species on the brink of extinction, immediate action is essential.
This announcement signals a pivotal moment in conservation efforts, not just for local ecosystems but for global awareness of the plight facing endangered aquatic species. The public is encouraged to support these initiatives as they unfold, emphasizing the need for community involvement in wildlife preservation.
