Former AFL Umpire Admits Breaching Asset Freeze in Court

BREAKING: Former AFL umpire Troy Pannell has confessed in court to breaching a court-imposed asset freeze by selling a racehorse and transferring $10,000 in cash to his former partner. This urgent development raises serious legal ramifications as he faces contempt charges.

Pannell’s admission came during a hearing in the Melbourne Supreme Court where he pleaded guilty to two charges of contempt. He had previously contested the sale of the horse Aimee’s Jewel, claiming he was not the owner, despite evidence to the contrary.

On March 2, 2023, Pannell sold the horse while under a court order that prohibited him from disposing of assets unless his net worth exceeded $8.7 million. Justice Andrew Watson had mandated this freeze in response to financial misconduct linked to Pannell’s former company, SeaRoad Shipping.

Details revealed in court showed that Matthew Scown, general manager of Yarraman Park, confirmed Pannell as the 100% owner of the horse. Scown’s affidavit indicated that the sale was executed under Pannell’s authority, undermining his defense that he was not the owner.

“Mr. Pannell is recorded as the owner of the filly in all records held by Yarraman,” Scown stated, highlighting the clear documentation of ownership.

The case took a dramatic turn when Pannell’s former partner, Maree Wilke, testified about her shock upon discovering a transfer form for the horse bearing her signature, which she did not sign. “He told me he signed it on my behalf,” she revealed, raising concerns about the legality of the transaction.

After the evidence was presented, Justice Watson questioned Pannell about his decision to defend the charges. Pannell ultimately chose to retract his denial and plead guilty to a fifth charge of contempt. “Yes, I will, your honour,” he responded when asked if he wished to change his plea.

Pannell, an experienced umpire who officiated over 200 AFL games, gained notoriety for awarding an unprecedented 17 free kicks to the Western Bulldogs in a single match against the Adelaide Crows in 2016. His return to court is set for Tuesday when he will learn the consequences of his actions.

This case underscores the serious legal implications of breaching court orders, particularly in financial matters. As developments unfold, the situation remains critical for Pannell, who now faces the potential of significant penalties.

Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story as the legal proceedings continue.
