Josh Freese Reflects on Foo Fighters Departure, Embraces New Path

Drummer Josh Freese has expressed no regrets following his dismissal from the Foo Fighters. Freese, who joined the band after the passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022, was let go in 2025. He has quickly transitioned back into performing with notable bands such as Nine Inch Nails and Weezer.

In an interview with Modern Drummer magazine, Freese stated, “No one should feel sorry for me.” He emphasized his satisfaction with his current career trajectory, despite the abrupt end to his time with the Foo Fighters. Freese noted that he has been busy touring with A Perfect Circle, playing shows with Weezer, and collaborating with artists like Danny Elfman and Billy Idol.

Reflecting on his departure from the Foo Fighters, Freese recalled the shock he felt when he was informed of his dismissal. On the day it happened, he was spending time with members of A Perfect Circle and Primus. “Everyone was in shock and asking me what the hell happened,” he said. Yet, he remained grateful for the opportunity to tour with friends and a skilled crew, stating, “I just remember thinking that I was really grateful to be out there on tour with my friends.”

Freese described the reasons for his firing as a “mystery,” particularly because it came unexpectedly. He mentioned having a few personal theories about the situation but did not elaborate. “I did really enjoy the two years I spent with those guys however, and they were good to me… until they weren’t,” he explained. The drummer appreciated his time with the band and praised Dave Grohl, stating, “I truly respect him so much as a drummer first and foremost.”

Despite the circumstances, Freese holds fond memories of his time with the Foo Fighters. He acknowledged that while he enjoyed playing with the group, the sudden nature of his dismissal was perplexing. “One day it was nothing but laughs, we’re on stage and Dave’s looking at me every night like, ‘You’re killing it dude’. And then it was just… over,” he recounted.

Freese’s ability to pivot quickly into other projects highlights his resilience and adaptability in the music industry. As he embarks on this new chapter of his career, he remains focused on the positive aspects of his journey and the opportunities that lie ahead.
