URGENT UPDATE: Monbulk Bowling Club is experiencing a remarkable surge in participation, with new teams and members transforming the club’s landscape in just the past six months. The latest results from the pennant season indicate a focus on development and community engagement, yielding exceptional outcomes just in time for the finals.
The club’s Saturday Pennant Team 1 fought valiantly to maintain its position in Division 2, facing a challenging season but displaying immense resilience. After a series of heart-wrenching losses—four games lost by under three shots—the team rallied to secure a much-needed victory against Warburton, winning 16/2 (100/69) in Round 13. This win granted them a mathematical chance to avoid relegation, but a subsequent loss against Boronia meant they ultimately fell short. Despite this, the team’s fighting spirit leaves them with numerous positives to build on for next season.
Meanwhile, the Saturday Team 2 has been consistently hovering around the top four, ultimately clinching a finals berth with a stunning victory against Croydon, finishing 16/2 (82/79). The team’s standout performance was marked by Case Broekhof’s impressive 29/15 win. This triumph secured them a spot in the finals, where they will face Warburton in a crucial match that could lead to a home final.
Additionally, the newly formed Team 3, comprised of first-year bowlers, exceeded expectations by winning six games this season. Their final match against Ringwood ended in a thrilling 14/2 (60/53) victory, showcasing the team’s growth and camaraderie. Vice President Brendan Griffiths praised their spirit, stating, “We are absolutely delighted with the interest coming from the community.”
The club’s Friday night barefoot bowls program has also been a hit, attracting numerous new members. Griffiths emphasized the enjoyment that participants find, saying, “People come down, have a meal or a sausage from our sizzle, and then have a bowl.” Upcoming events, including a beginners’ competition led by coach Rob Wilson, are expected to further boost participation.
In the Tuesday pennant, Team 1 faced a critical match against Eltham, ultimately securing only two points from a 2/14 (64/71) loss. With their placement precariously at fourth, they need strong performances in their final game against Croydon to ensure a finals chance.
The Tuesday Team 2 encountered a tough matchup against Heathmont, failing to secure a victory in a 2/14 (47/55) loss, leaving their finals prospects hanging by a thread. A final match against Croydon looms large, and a win is essential to maintain their second-place standing.
In a standout performance, the Tuesday Team 3 delivered an astonishing victory against Eastwood Golf, winning 16/2 (95/27). This high-scoring match reflected the team’s dominance and sets them up for a promising finish in the finals.
With the continued growth and enthusiasm surrounding the Monbulk Bowling Club, members and participants alike are looking forward to what promises to be an exhilarating finals series. As the community rallies around the teams, the club stands as a shining example of resilience and camaraderie in sports.
