Essantis Launches South East Asia’s Largest Oat Flour Mill

UPDATE: Essantis has just launched the largest oat flour mill in the South East Asian region, marking a significant advancement in Western Australia’s grain processing capabilities. The new facility, located in Wagin, can process an impressive four tonnes of oats per hour, with an ambitious goal of reaching 30,000 tonnes annually.

This groundbreaking development comes as Essantis, which has operated its oat processing plant since 2014, continues to expand its product line. The mill utilizes a quick and efficient process to convert oats from flakes to flour in mere minutes, according to Jason Reed, the manager of Essantis Wagin.

“This new oat flour mill isn’t just about production; it’s about meeting the growing demand for oat-based products, especially in markets like Indonesia,” Reed stated. The company currently sources oats from local WA farmers within a 150-kilometre radius of Wagin, leveraging the region’s reputation for high-quality oats with excellent milling characteristics.

Essantis is projected to process around 100,000 tonnes of oats this year, benefiting from a bumper harvest in 2025. Last season, WA oat growers collectively produced over one million tonnes of oats, a significant increase from 660,000 tonnes the previous year. This surge in production has allowed Essantis to scale its operations and invest in new capabilities.

Reed emphasized the economic impact of this expansion, noting that the majority of the oat products processed at the Wagin plant are exported globally, packaged in bulk and shipped to various countries. “Our oat products end up all over SE Asia, as we are an industrial supplier to companies that have their own oat brands and labels,” he explained.

The strategic move into oat flour milling aligns with the rising trend in plant-based alternatives, as oat flour serves as a key ingredient in producing oat milk. “We are actively developing other overseas markets for our oat flour,” Reed said, underlining the company’s commitment to growth and innovation.

To support this expansion, Essantis has installed a new automated packing line capable of processing 10 tonnes of oat flour per hour. The company currently employs about 50 people from Wagin and surrounding areas, contributing to the local economy and community initiatives, such as sponsoring the Wagin Woolorama agricultural show.

With this significant investment in infrastructure and technology, Essantis is poised to lead the oat milling industry in the region. Readers can expect further updates as the company continues to make strides in the oat market and expand its product offerings.

Stay tuned for more developments on this exciting story impacting both local farmers and international consumers!
