A collaborative effort to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health challenges was launched today through a newly published roadmap. This initiative follows the UN High Level Meeting held in September 2024 and was developed during a symposium in Melbourne, where over 70 global health leaders, advocates, researchers, and youth representatives convened on November 21, 2025.
The discussions highlighted the urgent need to accelerate progress on chronic health conditions in the context of multiple ongoing crises, including climate change, economic pressures, and social inequities. Participants underscored the interconnectedness of these issues, emphasizing that chronic conditions cannot be addressed in isolation.
From Commitment to Implementation
A central theme of the symposium was the critical transition from commitment to tangible action. Participants voiced that global agreements often remain theoretical until governments take definitive steps to implement them. Co-Director of Impact and Engagement at The George Institute stated, “Global agreements are only promises on paper – real progress depends on the action our governments take, and on advocates who push them to follow through.”
The discussions also brought attention to the specific impacts of climate change on health outcomes, particularly for women and girls. Program Lead for Universal Health Coverage Health Systems Science at The George Institute noted, “The health of women and girls is a cornerstone of universal health coverage. Without recognising climate change as a gendered issue, we are not going to be able to meaningfully move forward.”
Building Stronger Partnerships and Equity
The symposium called for enhanced partnerships across various sectors and advocated for more sustainable financing solutions and integrated care models. Participants stressed the necessity of embedding equity in every stage of health policy—from design to implementation.
The gathering concluded with a unified commitment to transforming the momentum achieved into sustained action that improves health outcomes, equity, and resilience in Australia and the broader region. Participants highlighted the importance of elevating the voices of those with lived experiences and fostering youth leadership in health initiatives.
This roadmap aims not only to address the immediate challenges posed by NCDs but also to ensure that health equity becomes a core principle guiding future health strategies. As the world grapples with these complex issues, the commitment and collaboration demonstrated at this symposium signal a hopeful step forward in global health advancements.
