In a targeted traffic operation this morning, the Southern Road Policing Services identified a total of 19 traffic offences within just one hour on the approach to the Tasman Bridge on the Tasman Highway. The operation highlighted significant issues related to speeding and unsafe driving practices in the region.
Concerns Over Driver Behaviour
During the enforcement period, officers detected multiple instances of non-compliance with traffic regulations. Sergeant Terry McCulloch expressed disappointment at the level of disregard shown by many motorists. He noted that excuses provided by drivers, such as “I’m late for work,” “I’m not from this area,” or “I didn’t realise,” were insufficient.
“These are not valid reasons for speeding as the speed limit is clearly signposted and all road users have a responsibility to drive safely and lawfully,”
McCulloch stated. His remarks reflect a growing concern regarding the impact of reckless driving on public safety.
The operation coincided with heightened awareness following a tragic double fatality in southern Tasmania earlier in the day. This incident has intensified scrutiny on driver behaviour and the need for stricter adherence to traffic laws.
Ongoing Enforcement Efforts
In light of these recent offences, Tasmania Police reiterated the dangers associated with speeding and unsafe overtaking, which significantly elevate the risk of severe accidents. Officials have confirmed that enforcement operations will continue throughout the region as part of their commitment to ensuring road safety.
Police urge all motorists to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations, as the consequences of non-compliance can be devastating. The message is clear: safety on the roads is a shared responsibility, and enforcement will remain a priority to protect the community.
