Wrexham Signs New Zealand Defender Cacace from Empoli

Wrexham AFC has bolstered its squad ahead of the new season by signing New Zealand international defender Libby Cacace from Italian club Empoli. The 24-year-old left-back joins Wrexham on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, reportedly surpassing the club’s previous record of £2 million (approximately $2.7 million) paid for Sam Smith in January.

Cacace leaves Empoli following a three-year stint, which ended after the team’s relegation last season. His arrival is part of Wrexham’s ambitious push for another promotion under the stewardship of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The club has celebrated three consecutive promotions, culminating in their ascent to the Championship, England’s second tier.

Cacace Excited About Joining Wrexham

In a statement, Cacace expressed his enthusiasm for joining the club, stating, “I’m absolutely delighted to sign for this historic Club, and I just can’t wait to get started. Looking from the outside, what they are creating here is something I want to be part of. The family they have here — it’s a tight-knit Club and that enticed me.” He highlighted a positive conversation with Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson as a pivotal moment in his decision to join.

Cacace’s addition comes as Wrexham continues its preseason tour in Australia and New Zealand. The team is scheduled to face Wellington Phoenix in the New Zealand capital on Saturday, where Cacace began his professional career. With 33 international caps for New Zealand, Cacace brings valuable experience to the squad.

Wrexham Prepares for Championship Season

Wrexham is gearing up for the Championship season, with their opening match set against Southampton on August 9, 2024. The club aims to build on its recent successes and solidify its position in the league. Parkinson welcomed Cacace, stating, “We are delighted to welcome Libby to Wrexham and look forward to integrating him with the squad on our return home.”

As Wrexham embarks on this new chapter in the Championship, the club’s growing ambitions and dedication to building a competitive team reflect its commitment to success on and off the pitch.
