Russia has intensified its military offensive against Ukraine, launching a significant attack involving 420 drones and 39 missiles overnight. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that the assault, which included 11 ballistic missiles, targeted critical infrastructure and residential areas across eight regions of Ukraine. The bombardment resulted in numerous injuries, including among children, although officials have not yet provided a confirmed total of casualties.
The attack comes as diplomats from the United States and Ukraine are set to engage in further peace talks in Geneva aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, which has now entered its fifth year. Zelenskiy noted that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump prior to the attack, expressing gratitude for Trump’s involvement in the peace negotiations.
Stalled Peace Talks Amid Continued Aggression
The US-brokered discussions between Moscow and Kyiv face significant hurdles, particularly concerning the future of territories claimed by Russia. Representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are also involved in ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran, are expected to meet with Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, during their time in Geneva. The talks are intended to maintain momentum in the US’s efforts to bring about a cessation of hostilities.
Ukrainian and European leaders have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of pretending to seek peace while continuing military operations. The discussions on March 15, 2024, are also set to cover a potential postwar recovery plan for Ukraine and preparations for a trilateral meeting with Russian officials, possibly occurring next week.
Zelenskiy has further instructed Umerov to explore the possibility of a prisoner exchange. According to Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation in previous talks, Russia returned 1,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and received 35 bodies of its own troops, although the timing of this exchange was not disclosed.
Targeted Strikes and Calls for Military Aid
The latest Russian offensive has focused on critical energy infrastructure, with attacks reported in the Poltava region and on electrical substations in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Emergency response teams were deployed across five regions, including the capital, to address the damage caused by the strikes. Zelenskiy credited Ukraine’s air defense systems, which successfully intercepted most of the incoming missiles, to the timely support of Western allies.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on allied nations to increase military assistance. In a statement on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Sybiha remarked, “When the whole world demands Moscow to finally stop this senseless war, Putin bets on more terror, attacks, and aggression.”
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, anticipating the outcomes of the ongoing peace talks amid the backdrop of continued conflict.
