Bowral High School in New South Wales has unveiled a new $8 million performing arts centre named ‘The Theatre’, a significant addition following extensive campus upgrades. This state-of-the-art facility aims to enhance High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) opportunities, enabling students to cultivate their talents in drama, dance, music, debating, and filmmaking. It features specialized areas for backstage production and filmmaking, paving the way for a comprehensive arts education.
On February 26, 2024, NSW Premier Chris Minns visited the centre, praising the upgrades as “first-class.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to helping every student realize their potential. “Our investment in projects at schools across the Wollondilly electorate represents a real step forward for education across the Southern Highlands,” he stated during his tour.
Wollondilly MP Judy Hannan echoed these sentiments, describing the investment as a long-overdue enhancement for the region. “I am pleased Bowral High School now offers a comprehensive HPGE program designed to nurture student talents across academic, creative, sporting, and social-emotional domains,” she remarked.
The focus on the arts is part of a broader initiative that includes improvements to various school facilities. Bowral High School’s relieving principal, Safija Bristina, highlighted the new centre as the best performing arts space in the Southern Highlands. “It provides our students with top-tier, industry-standard resources to nurture their talents,” she noted, adding that the facility will also facilitate engagement with local primary schools.
In addition to the performing arts centre, Bowral High is benefiting from a wider $9 billion state government investment in school infrastructure. This includes enhancements at other schools in the area, such as Tangara School at Renwick, which received a new classroom for students with special needs, and Picton High School, which has transformed learning spaces into 26 state-of-the-art classrooms and seven new staff and seminar rooms.
Construction is also progressing on a new high school, public primary school, and public preschool in the rapidly growing community of Wilton, all of which are set to open at the beginning of the next academic term. In addition to these major projects, there are more than 15 maintenance and minor works projects underway in existing public schools in Wollondilly, aimed at ensuring a conducive learning environment for students.
Prue Car, Deputy Premier and Education Minister, reaffirmed the government’s focus on providing world-class education within local communities. “We are building new schools in growing communities where they are needed most, and delivering upgrades to ensure our schools continue to provide students with world-class opportunities and an excellent environment for learning,” she said.
With the opening of ‘The Theatre’, Bowral High School is now better equipped to foster the artistic and creative talents of its students, ensuring they have access to resources that match their ambitions. This commitment to education reflects a broader trend in enhancing learning facilities across the region, ultimately benefiting students and their communities.
