Warriors Capture Historic T20 Title, Set Sights on Finals

UPDATE: The Point Cook Warriors have made history by winning the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Group B T20 title on Thursday night, defeating the Glenroy Lions and marking a significant achievement for the club. This win, the Warriors’ first-ever first XI premiership since becoming Point Cook in 2006, has sparked celebrations that continued into the night.

Captain-coach Shafraz Mohamed expressed his pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the special significance of this victory. “This one means a lot and more than the others,” he stated, reflecting on his seventh VTCA T20 grand final and second premiership. The Warriors fielded five players under the age of 20 at the beginning of the season, showcasing the club’s commitment to youth development.

The Warriors batted first, encountering early trouble by losing three wickets quickly. However, they managed to stabilize with a total of 7-144, thanks in part to Chathura Demuni, who top-scored with 36 runs. Key contributions from young players Nivain Gamanayake and Kavin Kumar helped secure a defendable total.

As the match progressed, Glenroy started strong but soon faltered under the pressure from the Warriors’ bowlers. Mohamed noted the turning point, stating, “Once the spinners came on it changed. We knew we had enough spinners to make it hard to get away.” The Warriors maintained composure, ultimately limiting Glenroy to a total of 6-109, with Vishay Ramchander taking two wickets.

This championship is not just a win for the Warriors but a promising sign for the club’s future. Mohamed remarked, “There’s massive potential with the kids, and they are hard to win regardless of what division you play in.” The success of the first XI is crucial for retaining young talent and fostering a competitive environment.

Looking ahead, the Warriors now shift their focus to the Roy Picone Shield season, where they currently sit in second place. Their next match against the Greenvale Kangaroos is pivotal to secure a home final. “We have the right mix,” Mohamed commented on the team’s potential. “The youngsters are still learning, and this is a two-year process. To get a home final is key.”

As excitement builds around the Warriors’ journey, fans and supporters are eager to see how this young team will perform in the upcoming finals. The club’s recent triumph serves as a beacon of hope and motivation, signaling a bright future ahead.
