NFL Combine Sparks Trade Talks and Quarterback Decisions

The NFL Combine in Indianapolis has generated considerable buzz this week as teams assess their strategies ahead of the upcoming 2026 draft. Top prospects showcased their skills, while executives and coaches engaged in conversations about potential trades and player movements. With the legal negotiation window for free agency set to open on March 9, 2026, teams are actively strategizing their next moves.

Among the prominent discussions are the Minnesota Vikings, who face important decisions regarding their quarterback position. Although they remain committed to developing J.J. McCarthy, the team is also exploring options for a veteran presence. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Vikings are eyeing quarterbacks such as Geno Smith and Kyler Murray as potential additions. Both players could provide valuable competition and mentorship for McCarthy, who struggled during his second season due to injuries.

The landscape for quarterbacks has shifted, making it challenging to predict the Vikings’ next steps. If veteran players like Smith or Murray become available, Minnesota could pursue them on short-term contracts to bolster their roster. Additionally, the possibility of trading for unproven backups, such as Tanner McKee or Davis Mills, adds another layer of complexity to their plans. The goal remains clear: to get McCarthy back on track and evaluate his long-term potential.

Across the league, the Miami Dolphins are in a similar position as they explore their quarterback options. While trade talks surrounding Tua Tagovailoa continue, skepticism remains about Miami’s ability to secure a trade due to Tagovailoa’s substantial contract, which includes $54 million in guarantees for 2026. Many expect that the Dolphins could opt for a post-June 1 release, allowing them to minimize the financial impact of his departure.

The Dolphins are also considering free agent quarterbacks, including Malik Willis. Discussions at the Combine suggested that Willis’ market could be robust, with several teams interested in acquiring his services. His unique skill set, particularly as a dual-threat quarterback, positions him as a valuable asset, although concerns remain about his readiness to lead an offense for an entire season.

The Arizona Cardinals are facing their own challenges with quarterback Kyler Murray, who carries a hefty price tag. With $36.8 million in guaranteed salary this year, the Cardinals are exploring all options, including a potential release or trade. If they decide to move on from Murray, they may consider acquiring Willis as a replacement, given his previous connection to head coach Mike LaFleur.

Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts are contemplating whether to use the franchise or transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones or wide receiver Alec Pierce. Reports indicate that the Colts are eager to retain Pierce, while Jones remains a strong candidate for a franchise tag. The estimated franchise tag for Jones is $43.9 million, a significant investment. As the deadline approaches, the Colts are working diligently to finalize a long-term deal with Jones to avoid the complications that come with the transition tag.

The buzz surrounding free agency extends beyond quarterbacks. Teams are also exploring trade possibilities involving players like A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles. Interest in Brown has surged, with teams speculating that a second-round pick could be his market value. However, the Eagles are reportedly asking for a higher price, indicating they are not in a rush to move their star receiver.

The combine has also highlighted potential moves for defensive players. The Dallas Cowboys are crafting a strategy to enhance their defense, with particular attention on securing a top pass rusher. They are expected to explore free agency options, including Arizona’s Jalen Thompson. Simultaneously, the Baltimore Ravens are looking to finalize a contract extension with quarterback Lamar Jackson, who has two years left on his deal.

As teams finalize their strategies leading into free agency and the draft, the NFL landscape is poised for significant changes. With the Combine serving as a platform for discussions, fans can anticipate an exciting offseason filled with trades, signings, and roster adjustments. The next few weeks will be critical as teams position themselves for success in the upcoming season.
