URGENT UPDATE: The fire burning northwest of Dumaresq Dam has been successfully contained, thanks to the relentless efforts of Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews who worked through the night. As of Saturday morning, fire officials confirmed that the blaze has burned approximately 227 hectares but is no longer a threat.
The RFS spokesperson announced that the fire had escalated to a “Watch and Act” orange alert level on Friday afternoon, March 6, but prompt action by firefighting teams has made significant strides in controlling the situation. “Overnight crews did great work to contain the fire,” the spokesperson stated, highlighting the dedication of the responders.
At the height of the firefighting efforts, there were 18 tankers deployed from various New England RFS crews, along with the support of two water-bombing aircraft. Heavy equipment operators, utilizing bulldozers, are currently aiding in the mopping-up process as fire crews continue their work today.
While Dumaresq Dam Road remains closed, officials confirmed that infrastructure at the Dumaresq Dam recreation area has sustained no damage, and there have been no reports of property damage. Firefighters are also conducting aerial evaluations of the site to ensure all hotspots are managed effectively.
As of now, the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, with officials working diligently to determine how it ignited. Fire crews are committed to monitoring and extinguishing any remaining pockets of fire throughout the day.
