Thredbo Installs Revolutionary Snow Machine for Warm Weather

URGENT UPDATE: Thredbo ski resort has just installed a cutting-edge snow-making machine capable of producing snow even at temperatures soaring to 20 degrees Celsius. This revolutionary Snowpro 260, imported from Italy, promises to ensure a snow-covered landscape from the start of the season in June through the October long weekend.

This latest technology is currently operational on the beginner-friendly Friday Flat slope, an area particularly vulnerable to melting during warmer spells. The machine, housed in a shipping container, efficiently generates and stores snow as ice, which is later deployed as needed. Human “groomers” then use specialized machines to distribute the snow, typically during the night.

A spokesperson for Thredbo stated, “What this will do is transform snow-making capabilities on this gentle slope.” The Snowpro 260 complements the existing fleet of 200 snow-guns across the resort, enhancing the overall snow-making capacity significantly.

Truck driver Shane Macleod, who successfully delivered the Snowpro 260, shared insights on its journey, stating, “It’s been a busy week getting it all down there.” The machine was transported from Port Botany to the Snowy Mountains resort, facing multiple customs checks along the way due to its rural destination.

As of July 16, 2025, the Bureau of Meteorology reports good natural snowfall conditions, with 160 cm of snow already recorded this season and 55 cm in July alone. Forecaster Angus Hines noted, “We haven’t had any really big dumps of snow, but we have seen frequent, more modest top-ups.”

Thredbo’s advancements come amidst a broader trend in the ski industry, as resorts invest heavily in snow-making technology to counteract the effects of climate change. This year, Perisher has similarly expanded its snow-making capabilities, boasting 236 snow-guns and a staggering $22 million AUD investment in improvements since 2007.

The increasing global temperatures have prompted ski resorts to adapt their strategies to ensure optimal conditions for skiers and snowboarders. A 2019 report highlighted a projected 20 percent decrease in snow-making conditions from 2020 to 2039 compared to the previous decades.

As Thredbo gears up for what promises to be a transformative ski season, all eyes will be on how the new Snowpro 260 performs and the impact it will have on winter sports enthusiasts aiming for the slopes. The resort’s commitment to maintaining snow quality despite warmer weather conditions is a game-changer for the ski industry, ensuring that winter sports remain accessible and enjoyable for all.

Stay tuned for more updates as Thredbo prepares for an exciting season ahead!
