UPDATE: The Riddell Cricket Club Bombers have triumphed in the Jensen Shield grand final, defeating Rupertswood on July 15, 2023, at Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve. This decisive victory marks a significant turnaround for the Bombers, who fell short in last year’s final.
In a display of dominance, the Bombers secured their title by bowling out Rupertswood for just 71 runs in the 27th over. The Bombers’ president, Brendon Johnson, expressed his pride in the team’s performance, stating, “It was really satisfying. We played amazing.”
Rupertswood won the toss and opted to bat first, initially finding success with a score of 27 runs without losing a wicket. However, their momentum quickly shifted as wickets fell rapidly. Luke Castle spearheaded the Bombers’ bowling attack, claiming 3 wickets for just 8 runs in six overs, while Thomas Wadden impressed with 3 wickets in one over, finishing with 3 for 15.
Rupertswood’s top scorer, Bruce Marshall, managed only 18 runs, while four of his teammates were dismissed for ducks. The Bombers faced a shaky start in their chase, losing both Castle brothers, Luke and Hayden, quickly, leaving the score at 2 for 8. Johnson recalled, “We had a nervous start. Rupertswood was bowling really well.”
Despite the pressure, Peter Cashen and Harry Fisher steadied the innings, ultimately leading the Bombers to victory in the 25th over. Cashen top-scored with an unbeaten 36 runs, while Fisher added 18 not out. Wadden was named the best player on the ground for his outstanding bowling performance, representing the bright future of the team as the youngest player.
Following their historic win, the Bombers celebrated their success but are already looking ahead to the next season. They plan to return to the more competitive Johnstone Shield and are focused on strengthening their squad. Johnson stated, “We’ll work hard in the off-season and secure a couple more recruits so our first and second XIs are as strong as possible.”
