Residents of Mackay are urged to exercise caution following two violent assaults on women in daylight hours. The incidents, which occurred in close proximity, have led to an increased police presence in the area as authorities investigate possible links between the attacks.
On February 3, 2026, a 53-year-old woman was assaulted while swimming at Town Beach, near Iluka Park. Less than ten days later, on February 13, a 27-year-old woman was attacked while walking on the Bluewater Trail. Authorities believe these incidents may be connected, although they currently have limited information regarding the suspect’s appearance.
At a press conference on March 16, Detective Inspector Emma Novosel addressed community concerns. “Both victims in this case have been approached from behind. Due to the traumatic nature of these attacks, it’s sometimes difficult for victims to recall specific details,” she stated. Novosel emphasized the bravery of the victims for coming forward to assist in the investigation.
Both women, who reside in Mackay, experienced violent attacks during weekday daylight hours. Novosel confirmed that one victim was wearing headphones at the time of her assault, highlighting the need for increased awareness among residents.
“While we encourage the community to continue enjoying public spaces, we ask that individuals take basic security precautions,” she said. “If possible, let someone know where you are going, avoid exercising alone, and keep headphone volume at a level that allows you to be aware of your surroundings.”
Police believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. They are appealing for anyone with relevant information or CCTV footage from the area to assist with the investigation. “We seek assistance from the Mackay community and from anyone who may have used those areas or seen interactions that seemed concerning,” Novosel added.
As police ramp up patrols to enhance safety, the community remains on alert. The incidents have raised serious concerns about public safety in Mackay, and authorities are committed to ensuring the well-being of all residents.
