Titans Narrowly Miss First Win, Focused on Future Growth

UPDATE: The Tarneit Titans faced another heart-wrenching defeat in the Western Football League Division 2, falling just short of their first win of the 2025 season. In a thrilling match on Saturday, the Titans lost to Sunshine Heights with a final score of 8.13 (61) – 9.4 (58).

Despite the loss, Titans’ captain Zach Thornton expressed optimism about the team’s development this season. “We did a lot of good things before we let them get on top,” Thornton said. “We then left our run a little too late.” With a young squad, the Titans are focused on growth rather than immediate results.

Thornton emphasized the importance of the team’s resilience, noting that they have shown significant improvement in their last few matches. “In three of our last five games, we’ve been solid post the bye,” he stated, highlighting that every player has improved since the beginning of the year.

Key players like Jayden Smithers, Jacob Millar, and Will Magher were recognized for their performance. Magher was the standout, scoring two goals. Thornton acknowledged that while the scoreboard may not reflect their progress, the team’s spirit and intent are evident. “We’re developing these guys not just as footballers, but their game awareness,” he explained.

The Titans remain winless this season, but Thornton believes the group is showing promise. “We are getting walloped on the scoreboard but it’s not as bad as what it shows,” he reassured fans. The young players are committed to overcoming these challenges together, focusing on the bigger picture of long-term improvement.

Looking ahead, the Titans will face four of the top five teams in their final matches. “Everything is bigger than the next four weeks,” said Thornton, as he encourages the squad to concentrate on positives and build connections for the future. “We want to have close competitive games against sides in finals.”

In other results from the league, Wyndhamvale Falcons triumphed over the Western Rams with a convincing score of 11.22 (88) – 3.1 (19), thanks to Lewis Stanton, who kicked five goals. The Suns also faced a setback, losing to West Footscray despite leading at three-quarter time, with a final score of 13.9 (87) – 10.13 (73).

The Titans are determined to turn their fortunes around as the season progresses. With their focus on future development and building a strong foundation, the squad remains hopeful for a brighter tomorrow on the field.
