Canadians Urged to Hydrate for Healthy Summer Travels

UPDATE: As millions of Canadians prepare for summer vacations, health experts are urgently emphasizing the critical need for a solid hydration plan. Whether traveling abroad or taking a road trip, dehydration can pose serious health risks, especially in the sweltering heat.

Recent studies reveal that travelers often overlook their hydration levels, losing between 6% to 9% of their hydration on a single flight. With many Canadians set to visit tropical destinations like Cuba and Mexico, understanding hydration’s role is essential for a safe and enjoyable vacation.

Travel fatigue and time zone changes can further compound the effects of dehydration. Reports indicate that up to 80% of Canadians experience illness after returning from vacation. Staying hydrated helps maintain a robust immune system, essential when exposed to germs in crowded spaces like airplanes.

Valerie Creel, a registered nurse and travel expert, warns that airplane cabins typically maintain a humidity level between 5% to 20%, significantly lower than the 40% to 60% humidity found in most homes. This drastic difference accelerates water loss, making it imperative for travelers to prioritize hydration.

“Dehydration during travel is a common issue,” Creel states. She emphasizes the need for pre-flight hydration, suggesting travelers start drinking water at least four hours before their journey. “Eating foods high in water content, such as cucumbers and oranges, can also aid hydration,” she adds.

Stephanie Webb, a tour guide based in Niagara Falls, highlights the physical demands of travel. She notes that increased activity, unfamiliar climates, and indulgent vacation habits often leave travelers feeling sluggish. “It’s no wonder so many of us end up dehydrated,” Webb explains.

To combat dehydration, experts recommend several essential items to pack. A refillable water bottle is crucial for staying hydrated during flights and throughout the trip. Electrolytes and supplements are also advised for replacing lost minerals after air travel. Additionally, hydrating toiletries like lotion and lip balm can combat dry skin, a common issue for travelers.

As Canadians gear up for their summer getaways, health professionals are urging travelers not to neglect hydration. “Staying hydrated is one of the simplest and most powerful ways to support your body when you’re on the move,” states Amy Neary, CEO of a network of IV hydration therapy clinics. She warns that dehydration can manifest as fatigue, headaches, and digestive problems—symptoms no one wants to experience while on vacation.

For those questioning the safety of drinking water at their destinations, the Government of Canada provides up-to-date travel advisories. Travelers are advised to opt for bottled water in areas where water safety is uncertain and to avoid ice in drinks when necessary.

While excitement builds for summer adventures, the message is clear: make hydration a priority. Before you embark on your journey, take a moment to hydrate. Your body will thank you.
