Urgent: Chilli Spray Incident Leaves 11 Hospitalized, Man Jailed

News. Shop owner Phillip Botha with a bottle of "Satans Spit", hot chilli spray from The Spice Wagon at Coventry Village in Morley.

UPDATE: An alarming incident involving the chilli spray known as Satans Spit has left 11 people hospitalized and a man sentenced to 16 months in prison. The shocking event unfolded on Anzac Day at a Bunnings store in Northam, Australia, where the potent spray was unleashed, causing chaos and panic among shoppers.

Authorities report that Paul Hart, 52, purchased the 30ml bottle online and claimed he intended to use it on chicken wings. However, he instead sprayed it inside the store, resulting in immediate health emergencies. Witnesses described feeling unable to breathe, with one fearing for their life. Judge Felicity Zempilas condemned Hart’s actions as “deliberate,” highlighting the dangerous nature of the product.

The black liquid, sold for just $22.95, is composed of chilli extract and alcohol, boasting a staggering 1.8 million Scoville heat units. For context, traditional pepper spray can reach between 2 million and 5 million Scoville units, while jalapenos range from 2,500 to 10,000.

Phillip Botha, owner of the Spice Wagon & Latino Grocer in Morley, where Satans Spit is sold, stated, “It’s popular more so with restaurants,” but acknowledged its potential for harm. “It stings tremendously, straight away,” he warned, emphasizing that misuse can lead to severe reactions, including nausea and difficulty breathing.

The incident has raised urgent questions about the availability of such dangerous products. Botha keeps Satans Spit behind a locked cabinet to prevent misuse, especially by minors. “It’s not a product you want to prank with,” he added.

CCTV footage from the store captured Hart spraying the product multiple times, indicating premeditated intent. Hart had reportedly consumed alcohol prior to the incident, raising concerns about his judgment. The aftermath saw emergency services rushing to the scene to assist those affected, highlighting the serious consequences of reckless behavior.

As the community reacts to this troubling event, the focus now shifts to regulations surrounding the sale of such high-risk items. Authorities are expected to evaluate the current guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and informed about the potential risks associated with products like Satans Spit. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible usage and the serious implications of reckless actions in public spaces.
