Prague Zookeepers Use Puppetry to Nurture Endangered Vulture Chick

Prague zookeepers are employing an innovative technique to care for a newly hatched lesser yellow-headed vulture chick. This unusual method involves the use of a puppet to ensure the chick receives proper care while preventing it from imprinting on humans. The chick, which is now three weeks old, is being hand-fed in a controlled environment following the disappearance of a dummy egg from its nest.

According to bird keeper Antonín Vaidl, the loss of the dummy egg indicated that the parent vultures were not prepared to care for their offspring. This is particularly concerning as the parents successfully reared chicks in both 2022 and 2023. The chick is currently being kept in a box and is being fed using a puppet designed to mimic the appearance of an adult vulture.

Vaidl explained that the puppet does not need to be an exact replica; instead, it should exhibit certain characteristics that the chick recognizes, such as the pale orange coloration on its featherless head and neck. The lesser yellow-headed vulture is native to regions in Latin America and Mexico, and Prague Zoo is one of only three facilities in Europe that breed these endangered birds.

Successful Techniques for Endangered Species

This is not the first time the zoo has employed unconventional methods to nurture vulnerable bird species. In previous instances, the same puppet-feeding technique was successfully used to save the critically endangered Javan green magpie and two rhinoceros hornbill chicks. These methods are particularly beneficial for bird species that typically live in pairs, where the absence of parental care can pose a significant threat to the survival of their young.

Vaidl affirmed, “The method has been working well. We’ll see what happens with the vultures.” This approach not only aims to safeguard the chick’s well-being but also seeks to ensure that it retains the natural behaviors essential for survival in the wild.

As the second egg is expected to hatch in the coming days, the team at Prague Zoo remains hopeful about the future of this vulture species. The efforts of zookeepers highlight the ongoing commitment to conservation and the innovative strategies employed to protect endangered wildlife.
