Mother Gives Son a New Life Through Kidney Donation

In a remarkable act of love and sacrifice, Helen Glazebrook provided her son, Pat Glazebrook, with a second chance at life by donating a kidney to him when he was just 16 years old. This life-altering decision, made approximately 13 years ago, has profoundly impacted Pat’s health and well-being.

From Diagnosis to Transplant

Pat’s health challenges began even before birth, when doctors diagnosed him with Tuberous Sclerosis, a condition that leads to the growth of tumors on various organs. This diagnosis foreshadowed a difficult journey for the Glazebrook family, marked by ongoing health issues, including polycystic kidney disease.

As his health deteriorated, Helen and her family were closely monitored by medical professionals at Westmead Hospital. “We were linked in beautifully with Westmead; they looked after him really well,” Helen recalled. Eventually, medical staff recommended a kidney transplant, prompting Helen to undergo testing to see if she would be a suitable donor.

Fortuitously, Helen’s kidney matched Pat perfectly. “We were really fortunate that it was a complete, perfect match,” she said. Although Pat’s siblings were also willing to be tested, Helen felt that risking another child’s health was unnecessary given the severity of Pat’s condition.

A New Beginning

Despite the ideal match, there were no guarantees that Pat’s body would accept the kidney, nor was there any certainty about how long the transplant would last. Nevertheless, the procedure took place without delay, allowing Pat to avoid the need for dialysis.

“He’s been really well since; it helped with everything,” Helen noted. “His specialist said once you get this kidney fixed, all this other stuff you’re dealing with will be so much better.”

Since the transplant, which occurred when Pat was a teenager, his life has transformed dramatically. With the successful operation completed, Pat has flourished. “Once the kidney kicked in, he was like a different kid,” Helen remarked. “He had energy and is now very outgoing.”

As Pat approaches his 30th birthday, he continues to thrive, a testament to the vigilance of the medical staff and the selflessness of his mother. Helen’s experience underscores the profound bond between parents and children, with her stating, “I think every parent would do the same thing… there’s no question you just do it.”

This story serves as an inspiring reminder of the lengths to which parents will go for their children, reinforcing the notion that acts of love can lead to extraordinary outcomes. As National Parents’ Day is celebrated on July 27, the Glazebrook family’s journey stands as a powerful example of sacrifice and resilience.
