Vanessa Kirby Embraces Sue Storm Role in New Marvel Film

Vanessa Kirby, the acclaimed actress known for her diverse roles, has expressed her deep enthusiasm for her character, Sue Storm, in the upcoming film The Fantastic Four: First Steps. At 37 years old, Kirby has openly shared her fascination with the character, describing herself as a “Sue nerd.” This new Marvel project features a star-studded cast, including Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn.

In an interview with Variety, Kirby elaborated on her connection to Sue Storm, who is often referred to as the Invisible Girl. She noted the character’s journey and transformation, stating, “There was something so allegorical about her. She was called Invisible Girl. Then Psycho-Man comes and disrupts everything, and she has a meeting with her own dark side in Malice.” Kirby highlighted the significance of Sue’s evolution from girlhood to womanhood, culminating in her renaming as the Invisible Woman.

Kirby is particularly eager to delve into Sue’s darker alter ego, Malice, expressing a strong desire to portray this complex side of the character. “I’m dying to do Malice,” she remarked. The character’s backstory resonates with Kirby, who explained that Sue endured a traumatic childhood, losing her mother in a car accident and facing the subsequent struggles of her father’s descent into alcoholism and imprisonment. “Sue had to become a mother to Johnny. They were orphans. They had to fight for themselves,” she noted, reflecting on the resilience that defines Sue’s character.

The actress emphasized Sue’s choice to maintain a positive outlook despite her difficult circumstances. “What I loved about her was that she chose a path that was inherently a positive one,” Kirby shared. She believes that Sue’s establishment of the Future Foundation is not merely a political act but a natural expression of her character’s essence.

Kirby has consistently sought out challenging roles throughout her career, embracing the opportunity to push her limits. In an earlier interview with TheTalks, she stated, “I really like pushing past my limits in that way — I love it.” She explained that when she encounters a script that intimidates her, it motivates her to take on the project. “I don’t think it feels as challenging when you read a script and go, ‘I know exactly how I am going to do this,'” she added.

The London-born actress has established herself as a prominent figure in both stage and screen acting. Reflecting on her passion for the performing arts, Kirby shared her early experiences with theatre, influenced by her parents’ love for the craft. “I always knew I wanted to act, but I had no idea how I was to go about it,” she recalled. “The audience is as important as the people on stage, so it always felt like a shared experience.”

As Kirby prepares to take on the role of Sue Storm, her enthusiasm and dedication promise to bring a unique depth to the character. With the film set to release soon, fans can look forward to seeing how her interpretation resonates within the Marvel universe.
