Rai Pursues Ryder Cup Aspiration as Wyndham Championship Weather Disrupts Play

Defending champion Aaron Rai faced a significant interruption during the second round of the Wyndham Championship as severe weather conditions forced players off the course. At the time the play was suspended, Rai was just one stroke behind the leader, Cameron Young, at the Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina.

Rai started his round with a strong performance, scoring a seven-under 63 in his opening round. During the second round, he managed to secure six birdies before lightning halted play while he was on the 14th hole. Young, who had also shown impressive form, reached a total of 14 under par when the weather disrupted the game. Mac Meissner and Sungjae Im are currently tied in the clubhouse at 12 under, with both players finishing their rounds at seven-under 63 and six-under 64 respectively.

Young expressed his ambitions beyond the tournament, stating, “For me, it’s not necessarily about this week. I’ve got a goal. In the middle of September, I’d like to be in New York playing on that Ryder Cup team.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on long-term objectives rather than getting bogged down by the immediate competition.

Rai’s performance thus far has been notable, particularly as he aims to defend his title from last year. After opening his round with three birdies, he notably added another at the fifth hole and two more after the turn. With the play suspended, he will resume his round on Saturday morning from the edge of the 16th green, seeking to capitalize on the momentum he had built.

As the tournament progresses, players like Joel Dahmen and Gary Woodland are also vying for top positions. Dahmen, who is focused on securing a spot in the top 70 of the FedEx Cup rankings, mixed two birdies with two bogeys to remain at nine under. Woodland, among those on the cusp of the playoff places, boosted his chances with an albatross on the par-five fifth hole, finishing the round with a score of 64, placing him alongside Dahmen.

The second round coverage is set to resume on Saturday at 19:00 GMT. Fans can catch the action live on Sky Sports Golf, available on channel 406 for subscribers. For those without a Sky subscription, streaming options for the PGA Tour and major events are available without a contract.

As the weather conditions are expected to improve, the excitement around the Wyndham Championship continues to build, with players eager to make their mark ahead of the Ryder Cup later this month.
