Australia vs. British and Irish Lions: ESPN Names Team of the Series

The rugby tour of Australia concluded with a dramatic finale as the British and Irish Lions faced the Wallabies in Sydney on March 15, 2024. Despite suffering a loss in their final match, the Lions secured the series with a 2-0 lead after earlier victories. The match was fraught with challenges, including a 37-minute weather delay due to a lightning storm that drenched the pitch. ESPN’s Sam Bruce has now revealed his selection for the Team of the Series, highlighting standout performances from both sides.

Key Players in the Spotlight

Tom Wright of the Wallabies stood out as the fullback, narrowly edging out Ireland’s Hugo Keenan. Wright’s impressive performance across the three Tests included running for 85 metres more than Keenan, alongside beating seven defenders. His kicking game in the second Test proved particularly effective, making him a crucial player for Australia.

On the right wing, Max Jorgensen emerged as a star of the series. The 20-year-old showcased his talent by scoring memorable tries in the first and third Tests. In the final match, he ran for 94 metres and made three clean breaks, solidifying his reputation as one of the most elusive players on the field.

The outside centre position was awarded to Huw Jones, who initially was not a frontrunner for selection. Jones capitalized on opportunities presented to him, especially after Garry Ringrose reported concussion symptoms. His contributions included a try in the second Test and several assists, proving critical in breaking through Australian defenses.

At inside centre, Len Ikitau was recognized for his resilience, making tough carries against a formidable opposition. He saved his best performance for the final Test, matching the highest number of carries while navigating through challenging conditions.

The left wing was claimed by James Lowe, whose assist for Tadhg Beirne’s try in the second Test was a standout moment. Although his performances varied throughout the series, his contributions proved vital in key moments.

Dominant Performances from the Lions

The fly-half position went to Finn Russell, who showcased his skill throughout the series. With a strong performance in the first two Tests, Russell’s passing game was pivotal, assisting in crucial tries and scoring significant penalty kicks. He was named Player of the Series, cementing his status as a key player for the Lions.

In the scrum-half role, Jamison Gibson-Park excelled, controlling the pace of play and making strategic decisions that benefited the Lions. His performance was integral in both attack and defense, ensuring a smooth flow of the game.

Jack Conan claimed the No. 8 jersey with his consistent contributions, including a series-high 24 tackles in the second Test. His work rate and ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball were instrumental in the Lions’ success.

The selection of Tom Curry at No. 7 highlighted his versatility and determination. Scoring tries in both the first and second Tests, Curry’s defensive capabilities were showcased in a crucial tackle that could be regarded as one of the key moments of the series.

As for the No. 6 position, Tadhg Beirne was named Player of the Series for his all-around contributions. His performance in the first Test set the tone, and he continued to be a dominant force throughout the series.

In the front row, James Slipper was acknowledged for his steadfast performance, providing crucial support to the Australian scrum. His experience was evident in every match, contributing significantly to the team’s efforts.

As the dust settles on this thrilling tour, the British and Irish Lions conclude their series with a strong foundation, while Australia reflects on a competitive outing that tested their mettle. The performances from this series will undoubtedly shape the future of rugby for both teams.
