Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, a renowned ice cream chain, is set to expand its presence in San Diego with a new location in Little Italy. The shop will open in Spring 2026 at 2100 Kettner Boulevard, Suite #1200, according to documents submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality.
Franchise owner Josh Barton confirmed the anticipated opening, aiming to attract local summer crowds. This new outlet will be part of a larger development that will feature various tenants, including The Boy & The Bear. Barton noted that while this is the only store he is currently focused on, the brand is actively engaging with the San Diego community.
Expanding the Brand’s Reach
In addition to the new location, Handel’s has recently launched a mobile food truck, which will operate at prominent venues like Viejas Arena and Snapdragon Stadium. Barton emphasized the brand’s commitment to the community, stating that they are proud to be official sponsors of San Diego State University (SDSU) athletics.
Barton operates several other Handel’s locations within the San Diego area, including establishments in Chula Vista, Hillcrest, near SDSU, and in La Jolla Village. The company has garnered a loyal customer base by offering over 100 rotating flavors, each crafted in-store daily. Signature offerings like Graham Central Station, Monkey Business, and Banana Cream Pie continue to delight fans.
Legacy of Quality and Flavor
Founded in 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream has expanded to over 150 locations across 15 states. The brand has earned accolades, including being named the #1 ice cream in the world by National Geographic. Its reputation is built on generous mix-ins, creative seasonal flavors, and a steadfast commitment to small-batch freshness.
The upcoming Little Italy location is expected to maintain the high-quality menu that has established Handel’s as a favorite among ice cream lovers. With its focus on community engagement and exceptional product offerings, the company is poised for continued success in the competitive ice cream market.
