Urgent Housing Crisis: Casey Faces 409 Homeless, 5,600 Homes Needed

UPDATE: The City of Casey is currently facing a severe housing crisis, with approximately 409 individuals experiencing homelessness, as confirmed by the latest Social Justice Stocktake report from the Salvation Army. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for immediate action in a community where 76.2 percent of residents now identify housing affordability and homelessness as critical issues—an increase from 55.3 percent and 27.2 percent in 2022.

The report emphasizes a staggering unmet housing need of 2,500 dwellings, underscoring the community’s growing concerns about mental health, financial hardship, and access to healthcare. Mental health issues have surged, with 67 percent of residents previously identifying it as a top concern. The latest Census data reveals that 10.3 percent of locals have been diagnosed with long-term mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression.

In response to these pressing challenges, Casey submitted its National Housing and Homelessness Plan in October 2023, revealing a shortfall of over 5,600 affordable homes. This gap is projected to nearly double by 2041 unless decisive measures are implemented immediately. The report proposes 12 recommendations aimed at both State and Federal governments, including mandatory affordable housing quotas and increased funding for prevention programs.

The data indicates that Casey has the second-highest number of women and the third-highest number of children accessing homelessness services in Victoria. Rental stress, particularly in the rapidly growing outer suburbs, exacerbates the crisis, with a notable lack of one-bedroom dwellings contributing to the issue.

Residents of Casey are calling for urgent action to address these alarming statistics. As the community grapples with the implications of this housing crunch, the need for government intervention has never been more pressing. Authorities are expected to respond to these findings soon, and community members are encouraged to advocate for immediate solutions.

This unfolding crisis not only affects those experiencing homelessness but also has profound implications for the community’s mental health and overall well-being. With the stakes so high, residents and officials alike are rallying for change, making it crucial for everyone to stay informed and engaged in this ongoing situation.
