Victoria Expands Free Pads and Tampons Program to Iconic Venues

BREAKING: Victorians can now access free pads and tampons at an expanded list of iconic venues across the state. This initiative, led by the State Government of Victoria, aims to improve access to essential period products in public spaces, making life easier for women and girls.

JUST ANNOUNCED: On Monday, November 6, 2023, Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins unveiled this significant expansion at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville, where three vending machines have already been installed. This launch marks a crucial step in the government’s ongoing commitment to support public health and gender equality.

More than 20 major venues will now provide free access to period products, including renowned locations such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the Queen Victoria Market. This initiative is part of a broader $23 million program aimed at ensuring women and girls can fully participate in all aspects of public life—be it work, study, or recreation.

Since the program’s inception in November 2023, over 90,000 packs of period products have been dispensed, providing tremendous savings for families across the state and addressing a vital need. As part of the rollout, local councils were engaged to help identify suitable venues, ensuring that these essential products are available in every corner of Victoria.

Victorians can easily locate the nearest facility offering free pads and tampons through an interactive map available on vic.gov.au/free-pads-and-tampons. This user-friendly resource emphasizes the government’s commitment to accessibility and service.

The emotional impact of this initiative cannot be overstated. By removing barriers to access, the program not only provides practical support but also fosters dignity and equality. Women and girls can now participate in activities without the worry or stigma often associated with menstrual health.

As this program continues to expand, the government encourages further community involvement to nominate additional venues. The goal is clear: to ensure that no woman or girl has to compromise her activities due to lack of access to period products.

Stay tuned for more updates as this vital initiative progresses, making a meaningful difference in the lives of Victorians.
