City of Canning Launches Urgent Campaign Against Abandoned Trolleys

Canning residents are being urged to report abandoned trolleys.

UPDATE: The City of Canning has just launched an urgent campaign to tackle the rising issue of abandoned shopping trolleys cluttering suburban streets. Residents are now being urged to return trolleys after use and immediately report any that have been left in public spaces. This initiative aims to preserve the cleanliness and safety of the community.

Mayor Patrick Hall emphasized the importance of this campaign, stating, “We know how frustrating abandoned trolleys can be. They create hazards, damage the look of our neighbourhoods, and sometimes end up polluting our local waterways.” The Mayor’s remarks come as the city grapples with an increasing number of trolleys left on verges, footpaths, parks, and waterways.

Residents are advised to refrain from taking trolleys outside shopping centres or their parking lots altogether. The campaign, initiated earlier today, is a proactive measure to keep Canning’s public spaces accessible and visually appealing. Trolleys left unattended not only create an eyesore but can also obstruct access ways, potentially damaging property and harming the environment.

Under local laws, retailers are responsible for retrieving abandoned trolleys within 12 to 24 hours after being notified, depending on the trolley’s location. If they fail to comply, the City of Canning may remove and impound the trolleys. Impounded items could be disposed of if not claimed.

The financial repercussions for retailers who neglect to collect their trolleys are significant. A failure to comply can result in a $250 fine, with court-imposed penalties reaching as high as $5,000 for more severe violations. Additionally, ongoing breaches could incur fees of $500 per day.

To report an abandoned trolley, residents can visit canning.wa.gov.au/trolleys. The city’s initiative is a collaborative effort with local shopping centres, aiming to keep Canning looking its best. As this campaign unfolds, residents are encouraged to participate actively and help maintain the integrity of their neighbourhoods.

As the situation develops, the City of Canning will monitor community engagement and the effectiveness of the campaign. Residents are reminded that their participation is vital to the success of this initiative, ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more attractive environment for all.
