UPDATE: A truck driver has been formally charged following a deadly crash that occurred earlier today on the Princes Highway near Frogs Hollow, approximately 13 km south of Bega. The collision, which involved three vehicles, resulted in the tragic death of a 54-year-old man and left two others injured.
The crash unfolded at around 11:15 AM on August 7, 2023, prompting immediate response from emergency services. According to the South Coast Police District, the involved vehicles included a Toyota utility, a Mazda SUV, and a Kenworth prime mover. Tragically, the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics.
In addition to the deceased, a 78-year-old man driving the Mazda and his 77-year-old woman passenger were treated for minor injuries and transported to Bega Hospital. The 21-year-old truck driver was unharmed but was arrested for mandatory testing at the hospital.
Police have since established a crime scene and initiated an investigation through their Crash Investigation Unit. The truck driver faces serious charges, including dangerous driving occasioning death, drive manner dangerous, and negligent driving occasioning death. He has been granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Bega Local Court on September 23, 2023.
As of Friday morning, the Princes Highway has reopened to all traffic after being closed in both directions for the investigation. Police have lifted diversions, and normal traffic conditions have resumed in the area.
