UPDATE: A petition to rename Berwick Springs Lake to Guru Nanak Lake is moving closer to a parliamentary debate, following its presentation in the Legislative Council. The public petition, spearheaded by South-eastern Metropolitan MP Ann-Marie Hermans on July 30, has garnered an impressive 2,690 signatures from the Berwick Springs community.
During her address, Hermans highlighted the division the renaming has caused within the multifaith community, emphasizing the historical significance of the Berwick Springs name, which many residents feel has been overlooked. She pointed out that the decision was made without adequate consultation, resulting in distress among local residents.
Kowan Ward Councillor Shane Taylor, a staunch advocate for the community, expressed his concerns during a gathering in March 2025, stating, “This has been a long-standing issue, and the state government renamed Berwick Springs Lake without speaking to local residents.” He noted that the lack of consultation has left many feeling ignored and has created divisions that previously did not exist.
The community’s commitment to preserving the history of Berwick Springs is evident along the Berwick Springs Promenade, where signs detail the lake’s historical origins. These efforts echo sentiments shared by Michael Ball, one of the organizers of the March meeting.
Councillor Taylor praised Hermans’ leadership, stating, “By tabling the petition, she has ensured our community is heard.” He expressed hope that this parliamentary development would lead to a review of the naming process and foster meaningful dialogue with residents.
The community’s response has been overwhelming, with many residents actively participating in discussions and meetings to express their views. Taylor added, “Thank you to those who signed the petition, shared information, or attended community meetings. These actions send a clear message about the value of community consultation and respect.”
As the petition advances, it is crucial for residents to remain engaged, as the outcome could set a precedent for future decisions affecting community identity and heritage. The next steps will be closely monitored as the Legislative Council prepares to address this pressing issue.
Stay tuned for further developments on this urgent matter as the debate unfolds and the community continues to voice its concerns.
