Perth Man Stranded in Romania After Crash; Insurer Denies Coverage

On July 15, Christopher Desmond, 72, was riding through Albania on his motorbike when tragedy struck.

URGENT UPDATE: A Perth man is facing a dire situation in Romania after a horrific motorcycle crash on July 15, 2023. Christopher Desmond, 72, was on a long-awaited adventure when the incident left him critically injured and stranded abroad.

Desmond was riding his 650cc Suzuki motorcycle through Romania when he suddenly woke up in an ambulance, disoriented and in pain. “One minute I was riding along a country road and the next minute I woke up in an ambulance,” he recounted. He was subsequently airlifted to Brasov Hospital after the crash.

The severity of his injuries is alarming. Desmond has suffered multiple fractures in his feet, hands, leg, and spine, requiring a staggering total of six surgeries. As he battles his physical recovery, the situation has been compounded by a shocking revelation regarding his travel insurance.

Desmond, an avid traveler who has been crossing countries on his motorbike since 2008, discovered that his Allianz travel insurance policy does not cover accidents involving motorcycles with an engine size over 200 cubic centimetres. This detail, buried in the fine print, has left Desmond responsible for mounting medical bills. Allianz stated they will not provide financial support, emphasizing the need for customers to thoroughly review their policy terms.

The insurance company’s spokesperson remarked, “In order to help ensure our customers have the protection they need, we emphasise the importance of reviewing the terms and conditions of the cover.” This statement has sparked outrage, particularly from Desmond and his daughters, who feel misled by Allianz’s advertising.

Desmond expressed frustration, stating, “I would have happily paid more or switched insurance companies if I had known I was not covered.” His daughters are devastated by the lack of financial assistance. “If he was covered, the insurance could organise someone to escort Dad home and he could potentially be home sooner with a medivac flight,” they lamented.

This situation highlights a troubling issue with travel insurance policies that many may overlook. Desmond, known for his meticulous attention to detail, is now left fighting against the very company that promised him coverage. “Allianz needs to stop hiding behind fine print and be honest with their advertising,” he urged.

As Desmond continues his recovery, he remains hopeful about returning to his motorcycle tour. “It has always been my dream to ride a motorcycle around the world,” he said. “Experiencing new sights, new cultures, meeting new people, and expanding my horizons is what I live for.”

The urgency of this case is escalating. Desmond’s family is considering flying to Romania to assist him, raising concerns about the financial implications. While Allianz offers non-financial assistance, it may not suffice for a man in need of urgent medical support and a way back home.

As this story develops, it serves as a stark reminder for travelers to scrutinize their insurance policies closely. The impact of Desmond’s situation resonates deeply, raising questions about consumer protection in the travel insurance industry.

Stay tuned for further updates as Desmond navigates this critical time and advocates for transparency in insurance coverage.
